No doubt, you will be aware of the changes to the Food Information Regulation that came into force a year ago in December 2014. This change requires food businesses to provide information about allergenic ingredients used in any food they sell or provide. There are 14 major allergens which need to be mentioned (either via the food label or your menu) when they are used as ingredients in the food you sell.
The Food Agency has the full list as well as lots of great labelling advice – you can find out more here
Of course alerting people via labelling and menus is an absolute must and essential in order for you to comply with the regulation. When you use Monitor Retail’s iPOS/POS solution, you will also be able to add further safeguards, which are particularly useful in an education environment. Here the reliance on the person with the allergy being able to make clear informed decision isn’t always 100%, often because in a busy school or college canteen, distracted by friends and other things students simply forget to check labels/menus. In primary/secondary schools, reading skills may not be fully developed yet, or pupils are too young to understand the significance of food labels.
Monitor Retail’s iPOS solution is able to help you be compliant by advising your customers, at the point of sale, of any of the 14 allergen ingredients that are contained in the food products you sell. The advantage to this is as well as your food labels and menus giving allergen advice (as required by the regulation), you are providing a valuable secondary warning at the tills and ahead of purchase/consumption.
By creating nutritional lists in Monitor’s software and applying them to products, you can create warnings that allows till operators to inform customers with specific allergen information. User specific warnings or prevention of purchase flags will pop up on screen once the user’s ID card has been swiped and the product is selected.
